We found 1 bright / 4 "worms in my garden in California, what are they?
I was making steps between the garden beds, and the sun went down, but it was cold, so I kept digging shallow furrows to put the stones in the porch light. I realized that when I dug into the ground wet, there were bright spots. I picked up a pair on hand and inside, and looked like small brown worms. Maybe worms or larvae do not know. I live in California, right next to the ocean, so I really do not think they are worms that turn into fireflies. What are they? Me on Google and Google and found no reasonable coincidence. Has anyone found these before?
There is a group of beetles closely related to the fireflies (Family Phengodidae) that are often called "fireflies". Here are some pictures: http://bugguide.net/node/view/19933/bgimage, http://bugguide.net/node/view/17799/bgimage. They are often found in moist soil after rain.
