in California, what would happen if a person was caught in possession of a knife or a large pocket knife?

What kind of penalty that this person will receive only if possession? And what if I had to pull it to scare someone to think they are being difficult but without any intention of actually using the knife?

I guess I'm a bit harder and Eric Mikeysco nose. I agree in possession matters, but taking a knife to someone could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, an offense under Penal Code section 245. Although the prison is not likely for a first offense, depending on the circumstances, and the dangerousness of the conduct, at some time in jail as a condition of probation could result.
